Flip over almost any zero-sugar can on the cooler shelf and you will find the same two words near the bottom of the ingredient list: stevia leaf extract. It has quietly become the default answer for brands that want to advertise zero grams of sugar without printing the word sucralose on the front of the can.
Stevia is a reasonable choice. It is also not the only one, and it comes with trade-offs that nobody puts on the label. Here is a plain-language look at what stevia actually is, why it shows up in so many energy drinks, and what it does to the taste of what you are drinking.
What stevia actually is
Stevia comes from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana, a shrub native to South America. The sweetness is not the leaf itself. It comes from a family of compounds inside the leaf called steviol glycosides, which manufacturers steep out and purify into a concentrated extract.
Those compounds are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so a finished drink needs a tiny fraction of a gram. That is the whole trick behind a can that reads zero calories and zero grams of sugar. There is so little sweetener in there by weight that it barely registers on a nutrition panel.
The two glycosides you are most likely to see named are rebaudioside A and rebaudioside M, usually shortened to Reb A and Reb M. Different glycosides taste noticeably different from one another, which matters more than you would expect. We will come back to that.
Why energy drink brands reach for stevia
There are three reasons, and they are all practical rather than nutritional.
- Zero sugar sells. The category has spent a decade competing on a single number, and the fastest way to get that number to zero is a high-intensity sweetener.
- It reads as natural. Stevia is plant-derived, which gives a label a friendlier feel than sucralose or aspartame, even when the extract itself is highly processed.
- It is inexpensive per serving. When a fraction of a gram sweetens a whole can, the cost of sweetening is close to nothing compared to real fruit juice or cane sugar.
Which energy drinks use stevia
More than you would guess, and often inconsistently within the same brand. Celsius runs a separate line, CELSIUS Sweetened with Stevia, that uses a blend of stevia and erythritol, while its original line is sweetened with sucralose. Zevia built its entire portfolio on stevia. A long list of smaller functional brands do the same.
The takeaway is to read the panel on the specific can in your hand. Sweetener choices change from line to line inside one brand, and the front of the package almost never tells you which version you picked up.
Is stevia bad for you?
Based on the published research, no. Purified steviol glycosides are treated as safe at normal intake levels by regulators in the US and Europe. A randomised 12-week trial in healthy adults found that daily stevia consumption did not affect glycaemia, and a separate crossover trial found stevia lowered appetite sensation without a rebound in later food intake or blood glucose.
Researchers themselves add a caveat worth repeating. Results across non-nutritive sweetener studies are mixed and difficult to compare, which is exactly why public opinion on them stays split. Nobody should tell you the science is settled in either direction.
One detail people miss: stevia rarely travels alone. Because the extract is so concentrated, formulators pair it with a bulking agent, most often erythritol, a sugar alcohol that adds body and mouthfeel. Some people report digestive discomfort with sugar alcohols at higher amounts. If you are the kind of person who reads labels closely, look at the whole sweetener system, not just the word stevia.
The taste problem is real, and it is measurable
This is the part the marketing skips. If you have ever taken a sip of a stevia-sweetened drink and noticed something bitter arriving a beat after the sweetness, you were not imagining it.
Researchers screened all 25 human bitter taste receptors and found that two of them, hTAS2R4 and hTAS2R14, respond specifically to steviol glycosides. The aftertaste is a receptor-level event, not a matter of opinion. Stevia also carries a licorice-like aromatic quality that comes from the plant itself, with more than 40 aromatic compounds identified in the leaf.
Chemistry explains why some stevia tastes better than others. Glycosides with more glucose units attached tend to be sweeter and less bitter, which is why the industry has spent years chasing purer Reb M and layering in flavor maskers to cover what is left. That is a lot of engineering in service of a number on a panel.
Why Huxley uses 5 grams of organic cane sugar instead

Where this fits in the Energy Refresher wave
The reason sweeteners are suddenly a live conversation is that the whole category is shifting. Starbucks launched an Energy Refresher nationwide in April 2026, McDonald's followed in May, and Sonic, Panera, Dunkin' and Tim Hortons all moved in behind them. Lighter caffeine, real fruit, less of the chemical-tasting stuff. That is what people are actually asking for.
The catch with a cafe refresher is that you have to go get it. A drive, a line, a wait, and an order that is only right about half the time. There is no single correct answer here, so use your own priorities.

- If you dislike the aftertaste, trust yourself. You are reacting to a documented receptor response, not being picky.
- If you want a short ingredient list, a small amount of one real sweetener is usually simpler than a stack of three engineered ones.
- If flavor is the deciding factor, look for real fruit juice on the panel. Nothing masks well enough to replace it.
